Instagram reels: what they are and how they work

Instagram Reels are among the most important tools on the social network owned by Meta Inc. But what are they for and how should they be used? What are Instagram Reels?

How does the algorithm that governs Instagram’s Reels work?
The algorithm governing this feature looks a lot like the one governing the “TikTok For You” section. It is influenced by your most-followed accounts, your geographic location, and the type of content with which you most often interact. What we know for sure is that the algorithm tends to favor bouncing Reels that:

  • use music tracks belonging to Instagram’s library
  • use vertical videos
  • employ the creative tools provided by the app, including filters, text and special effects


are stimulating and can initiate challenges or trends
they entertain and do not bore (they attract attention or offer entertaining twists)
In contrast, Instagram discourages creators and brands from posting Reels that:

  • do not meet Instagram’s community guidelines
  • feature much of the image covered by text
  • are blurred due to low resolution
  • have been recycled from other apps (contain logos or watermarks belonging to other services or social networks)

In addition to adding music tracks, Reels allow you to trim clips, adjust the speed of videos, and use filters and special effects. The app allows you to create Reels in three different ways:

from the Instagram home screen, by tapping on the “+” symbol located in the upper right corner
via the Reels tab
directly from the Instagram Stories camera. The latter mode allows you to choose audio, video speed, text, filters to apply, and stickers
